Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) combines FDA-approved medications—such as methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone—with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders. This comprehensive approach addresses both the physiological and psychological aspects of addiction, reducing withdrawal symptoms, cravings, and the risk of relapse. MAT has been shown to improve patient survival, increase retention in treatment, and enhance the ability to maintain employment and engage in daily activities. It is considered an effective and evidence-based strategy for managing OUD and supporting long-term recovery.
